Ngerulmud is the national capital of Palau, but it is not the country’s main urban or visitor center. The practical base for most foreign residents is Koror, with Ngerulmud functioning primarily as a government district on Babeldaob. The appeal lies in surrounding nature, uncrowded roads, mangroves, reefs and access to one of the world’s most celebrated diving regions. Daily costs are high because many goods are imported, housing supply is thin and a car is usually necessary. Remote work is possible for light workloads with a verified connection, but Palau is better suited to a nature-focused sabbatical than a high-output professional base.
